Staying Out for the Summer on Scotland’s Estates
29th July 2008When school is out this summer, Scotland’s countryside is surely “in”. Scotland’s Estates are the place for children and families to enjoy and explore Scotland’s great outdoors this year.
A new initiative by the Scottish Estates Business Group (SEBG) is encouraging young people to make the most of their summer holidays by visiting their local estate and getting involved in the wide range of activities available.
On Scotland’s Estates this summer you can mountain bike, golf, raft, hike, climb, ride horses, ride quad bikes, explore castles and forests and much more. SEBG is urging children and families to get out into the great outdoors and have a go at something new this summer.
Julie Cumming (12) visited Atholl Estates today to sample the range of activities on offer there. She said: “There’s so much for young people to do on Estates. Folk think of this as being a playground for adults but it’s not. I love the outdoors and I’m planning to spend a lot of time on the Estate over the summer!”
David Greer, Head of Rural Enterprises at Atholl Estates, said: “Scotland’s countryside plays a huge role in providing recreation and sport facilities for tourists and Scots alike. Whether taking part in traditional sports such as golf, or in newer, more adventurous pursuits such as mountain biking, Scotland’s Estates have something for everyone.
“So we’re challenging children this summer to get out and do something different, learn a new sport or learn a about Scotland. You won’t be able to do any of that by staying in this summer.”
Organised activities for children on Estates this summer include:
- Treemendous Tree Day – 13th July at Bowhill on Buccleuch Estates including chainsaw carving, horse logging and tree climbing
- Summer family fishing on the Tay with Scone Estate
- Pony Trekking at Atholl including special picnic treks every Friday
