Farming Industry Event Examines New Entrants Challenge
22nd August 2006An industry-wide conference is being staged next month to address one of the biggest challenges facing farming – how to create opportunities for new entrants.
The Scottish Estates Business Group is hosting the conference at Our Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh on September 28.
The event will examine the issues affecting new entrants and suggest ways in which everyone in the industry can play their parts in finding solutions.
The conference will be chaired by Professor Jeff Maxwell, Chairman of the Tenant Farming Forum, and will feature addresses by former NFUS President John Cameron, Andrew Stewart, from the Scottish Association of Young Farmers Clubs, and Alan Barr of Brodies. Other industry representatives, including NFUS, STFA and the Scottish Rural Property and Business Association have been invited to attend.
Roddy Jackson, Deputy Chairman of SEBG, said: “It is in everyone’s interests that the issue of new entrants is addressed on a cross-industry basis. Scotland’s rural estates have a key role in this area and are committed to finding practical and constructive solutions.
“We look forward to a constructive debate on the key issues affecting farming opportunities for new entrants and to achieving a solution to this very serious problem. I believe this is best tackled by a co-ordinated, united approach and SEBG is keen to work with all those in the industry to deliver the objective of freeing up land for the next generation of farmers.”
