Scottish Estates Celebrate Spring Outdoor Access Festival
21st March 2005Members of the Scottish Estates Business Group (SEBG) will this week play host to a range of outdoor activities in locations throughout Scotland as part of the Spring Outdoor Access Festival. The Festival, which runs from 18th - 28th March across the country, is being coordinated by Scottish Natural Heritage and aims to highlight the enjoyment offered by the outdoors and promote Scotland’s statutory access rights and responsibilities which came into force in February.
SEBG recently launched the ‘Access Gateway’ card in conjunction with SNH to support the Scottish Outdoor Access Code and is pleased to further promote the Code by taking part in a festival dedicated to promoting Access. Buccleuch Estates, Atholl Estates and Seafield Estates will offer a range of free guided walks, information, and fact finding treasure trails.
Lord Seafield, Chairman of the Scottish Estates Business Group and owner of Seafield and Strathspey Estates said: “The countryside has so much to offer all of us. It is there to be enjoyed as well as nurtured and Access is something that progressive estates have encouraged for many years. Now that Access rights and responsibilities have been set out in the Access Code, the SEBG wants to encourage people to come out and appreciate the wealth and wonder of nature on their doorsteps, and also to understand the needs of others who work on or help to manage the landscape and its natural wildlife.”
Buccleuch Estates is hosting a special Access Roadshow in Bowhill on Wednesday 23rd March at which Buccleuch’s Ranger Service will offer useful advice and information about the new Access rights and responsibilities. A Foraging for Facts Treasure Trail is also taking place at Bowhill and Drumlanrig on Saturday 26th March and will explain the new Access Code in a fun way.
On Good Friday, farmers, foresters and game keepers from Atholl Estates will be on hand at an information tent near Blair Castle to answer practical questions about how new Access rights can be enjoyed at the same time as working operations are carried out in the countryside. Free guided walks will take place on Easter Monday.
The Seafield Estate at Grantown-on-Spey is offering two free guided walks, a Ramble by the River and a March on the Moor, on Wednesday 23rd March.
