SEBG welcome guide to Agricultural Holdings Act

16th August 2004

The Scottish Estates Business Group today urged landowners and tenant farmers to embrace a new layman's guide to the Agricultural Holdings (Scotland) Act.

The guide has been published by the Tenant Farming Forum, the cross-industry organisation formed to promote the interests of the tenant farming sector.

The Scottish Estates Business Group (SEBG), a founder member of the Forum, has confirmed its members will be distributing the guide to their tenants and using the guide themselves. The group also urged other landowners and tenant farmers to embrace the guide.

Sandy Lewis, Chairman of SEBG said: "The guide provides a measure of clarity in a sector that is struggling to come to grips with the introduction of new and complex legislation. It will help landowners, tenants and their advisors ensure the legislation is working in everyone's best interests - and for the best interests of farming in Scotland.

"I'm sure that the publication of the guide will show politicians and decision makers watching the development of the legislation that there is a strong desire from all parties to ensure that Scotland's tenant farming sector is strong, vibrant and ultimately secure."

Professor Jeff Maxwell, chairman of the Tenant Farming Forum, said: "The purpose of this guide is to assist tenant farmers and landlords in identifying issues both should be aware of when entering into an agreement. It will help both parties agree what they wish to achieve through their agreement."
