Scotland's Largest Estates Open Their Doors

15th June 2004

The Scottish Estates Business Group (SEBG) has today launched a programme of Estate open days across Scotland, inviting the public to see behind the scenes of a modern working estate for the first time. Starting on Saturday 29th May, SEBG members including Buccleuch, Seafield, Atholl and Dunecht, will be holding Open Days on their estates, offering an informative, educational and fun experience, showing how the estates are run and the vast diversity of activities that are carried out by landowners.

Sandy Lewis, Chairman, SEBG said: “For too long, Scotland’s landowners have carried out the valuable work they do in Scotland’s countryside behind closed doors. As part of SEBG’s mission to promote and support Scotland’s progressive estates, this programme is a key part of that strategy. As landowners, SEBG members understand the responsibilities they have and the need to engage with the world outside their estates at all levels. We work on and manage the land we are responsible to the highest standards – we’re proud of what we do and we’re keen to tell our story.”

William Murray, the Earl of Mansfield, is holding an Open Day on his estate at Scone, near Perth, on Saturday 29 May. He says: “I feel very strongly that Estates such as Mansfield should be proactive in telling people what we do and how we do it. The SEBG Open Days are an excellent way to do just that. I hope that everyone who comes to Scone on the 29th will have an enjoyable and informative day

“We have a fantastic day planned, which really reflects the wide range of contributions that the Estate makes to Perthshire. Visitors will see for themselves how individual departments on the Estate interact with local communities on issues such as employment, education and commerce. Some of the estate’s commercial tenants will have on display a selection of their products manufactured by them on the Estate’s premises.”
